<p> The rink of the new &#8220;Iceberg&#8221; Skating Palace was opened for test skating after 100 days of preparations. Students of the winter sports school in Sochi, the Olympic champion and Sochi 2014 Ambassador, Tatyana Navka have had the first chance to test the new ice rink. The first test events &#8211; the Grand prix figure skating final &#8211; will take place at “Iceberg” in December 2012 and in February 2014 the venue will host Olympic competitions in figure skating and short track.</p>

<p>The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee and State Corporation for Olympic constructions “Olympstroy” were the organizers of the master-class.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>It took several days to prepare the Olympic ice rink in Sochi. Firstly, the cooling equipment was configured. Cooling machines reduced the temperature of the cooling agent to minus 9-14 °C. The cold liquid, which does not freeze or crystallize, began to circulate in the pipes and mounted on concrete slabs. The overall length of the pipes is over 20 kilometers.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The cold concrete surfaces of the rink were covered with water from hosepipes. Over some hours, the ice was frozen with several thin layers. The &#8220;ground ice&#8221; with a thickness of 1.5-2 centimeters was decorated with white paint, and then another 3 centimeters of ice were added on the top. The overall thickness of the ice surface totaled 4-5 centimeters. The ice was then finished by hand and the surfaces were given an even and consistent shape.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>In order to control the condition of the ice, special detectors were installed which record any change in temperature at separate parts of the rink. Overall, approximately 100 days were needed for the configuration and testing of the rinks. Most of the time was spent in installing engineering slabs for the freezing of the ice. These consisted of multi-layered ice cakes made from various materials, including pipes and high density frost resistant concrete. The concrete is able to withstand 200 freezing-unfreezing cycles. Taking into account the fact that the rinks are frozen once a year, the concrete will last a minimum of 200 years.</p>

<p>The Sochi 2014 Ambassador, Olympic champion Tatyana Navka commented:</p>

<p>“It was a special feeling, going out on the Olympic ice for the first time. In less than two years, I hope to see Russian figure skaters win not one gold medal on this ice. My task is to do everything I can to ensure the rebirth of sport in Russia, to encourage everyone to become more involved in sport, especially disadvantaged children from across Russia. It was great to see the students of the Winter Sports School in Sochi on the “Iceberg” ice today, and I hope they will fulfill their potential”.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Tests of the first Olympic ice, under the leadership of Tatyana Navka, were carried out by approximately 700 students. The school, founded in December 2010, offers 14 Winter Olympic sports disciplines, including bobsleigh, skeleton, luge, hockey, figure skating, cross country skiing, alpine skiing, snowboarding and curling. In total, there are 34 teacher trainers working at the school. The school’s success is reflected in its results and it will become an important part of the Sochi 2014 legacy. Two female students have already been accepted in the Russian bobsleigh team.</p>

<p> Vivid Vocab, a new SAT and GRE vocabulary software, has decided to permanently offer a free trial to potential users via their website.  The trial, which was once meant as a device intended to bring on product testers, has ended up turning into one of the company&#8217;s most effective sales tools.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>&#8220;With all the distractions on the web, it&#8217;s incredibly tough to capture visitors&#8217; attention for long,&#8221; says Anthony-James Green, head developer of Vivid Vocab and president of its parent company, Test Prep Authority.  &#8220;When users actually try the software, they immediately understand what it does, how it works, and how it&#8217;ll help to raise their SAT scores.  But trying to explain the functionality of the software in the 5 second &#8220;attention window&#8221; we have from most users is nearly impossible.  That&#8217;s why we put up the free trial in the first place.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Vivid Vocab has a unique approach to teaching students SAT vocabulary words: it creates &#8220;association maps&#8221; in students brain by &#8220;assaulting them&#8221; with intentionally bizarre, multi-sensory mnemonics and stories.  Rather than have students study flashcards, which create few mental associations and which are notoriously easy to forget, Vivid Vocab develops deep, permanent imagery around each SAT and GRE word&#8217;s definition.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Take, for instance, the word &#8220;benevolent,&#8221; which means &#8220;generous and kind-hearted.&#8221;  Vivid Vocab&#8217;s software shows users a picture of two men shaking hands atop an enormous pile of money and gold bullion.  &#8220;When you work for someone benevolent,&#8221; students are told, &#8220;the benefits are prevalent.&#8221;  Students are encouraged to repeat the mnemonic out loud while looking at the image, to listen to an audio clip re-telling the story with the embedded mnemonic, and looking over the word&#8217;s other features, including &#8220;suitable synonyms,&#8221;  &#8220;diction discussion,&#8221; and &#8220;explicit examples&#8221; (the software&#8217;s developers clearly have a penchant for alliteration).</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The developers of Vivid Vocab initially offered a free trial for a very specific reason: they wanted users to let them know what was wrong with the product.  &#8220;It&#8217;s easy to drink the Kool-Aid when it comes to your own software,&#8221; says Green.  &#8220;You can spend all day patting yourself on the back, but at the end of the day, the only way you can improve a product is by asking your users what they dislike about it and then ruthlessly fixing those problems.&#8221;  Following this philosophy, Vivid Vocab&#8217;s founders tried giving away the software to anyone they could in an effort to get as much feedback as they could in the shortest time-frame possible.  &#8220;It&#8217;s tough to get people who&#8217;ve never heard of a product to pay for it.  It&#8217;s sort of a chicken-and-the-egg situation, since people aren&#8217;t going to hear about it until they use it.  We figured the best way to short-circuit that whole conundrum was by giving a free trial of the software to anyone who wanted to test it out.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>As users started pouring in for the free trial, Vivid Vocab&#8217;s developers started soliciting them for as much feedback as possible.  &#8220;We asked them to be brutal,&#8221; said Green of the process.  &#8220;Compliments are nice, but we were looking for the searing, really mean stuff.  That&#8217;s what makes the product better.&#8221;  Over the course of a month, users provided Vivid Vocab&#8217;s developers with plenty of feedback, which the developers started acting on immediately.  &#8220;People pointed out everything from small typos to broken images,&#8221; says Green of the process.  &#8220;We fixed all that stuff up.  But what&#8217;s more exciting is that we got some really great and consistent suggestions for the next edition, such as a &#8220;random word&#8221; button and a testing module.  We&#8217;ll be adding in all of these features over the next few months.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>In the process of extending its free trial, however, Vivid Vocab got something even better: paid users.  &#8220;Users can cancel at any time during their free trial &#8211; all they need to do is shoot us an email.  But almost none of them have.  As of right now, 95% of the people who sign up for the free trial end up converting to paying customers, and our feedback has been awesome.&#8221;</p>

<p> Following a blowout fiscal second quarter, Apple Inc. continues to be the leader amongst technology stocks in the world, according to George Leong, contributor to popular financial e-newsletter Profit Confidential. However, in his recent Profit Confidential article, Apple: This Technology Stock Still Has its Mojo, Leong highlights several key areas to watch if the firm is going to continue to grow, including emerging markets and new products, including the key to Apple’s continued success.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“The key for Apple as the company moves forward will be to make sure its products continue to evolve and stay ahead of the competition,” says Leong.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Increasing the company’s exposure in Asia and other emerging markets will also be a key for Apple, according to Leong. “To gain traction in the emerging countries, the company is planning to offer a lower-priced ‘iPhone.’” </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>In his recent Profit Confidential article, Leong reports that Apple recorded quarterly revenues of $  39.2 billion, a big increase from the $  24.7 billion reported in the comparative quarter last year, and above the consensus estimate of $  36.81 billion. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“International sales drove 64% of the total revenues and, with the company’s targeted expansion in China, India, and other emerging companies, the growth should continue,” says Leong.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>What impressed Leong was the gross margin expansion to 47.4%, compared to 41.4% in the year-earlier quarter.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“A slight disappointment in all of this was a shortfall in ‘iPad’ sales of 11.8 million units, below the 13-million unit estimate and whisper number,” says Leong. “The plus was that the unit sales were 151% higher year-over-year, so I don’t see a major issue developing here.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Leong is somewhat concerned about Apple’s guidance of $  34.0 billion in revenues and $  8.68 per diluted share in the fiscal third quarter, which is below the consensus $  9.93 per diluted share on revenues of $  37.4 billion expected by 43 analysts.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“The reality is that the iPhone is arguably the most sought-after smartphone on the planet at this time” says Leong. “For now, Apple remains the ‘best of breed’ and this will continue until someone can knock the company off its perch.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>

<p>It all started around 1986 when Nigel Hickey, aka Whiplash, bought Run D.M.C’s new album “Raising Hell.” Upon hearing Jam Master Jay, one of the most compelling turntablists hip hop has ever seen, Nigel wanted to do the same. But at the age of 11, he lacked the supplies needed to begin practicing, only having a double tape deck to use. &#13;<br />
<br />Many years later, Whiplash started to take that childhood dream of spinning wax and make it a huge part of his life. In early 2002, Whiplash was able to get his first set of tables and a mixer. He spent many hours trying to perfect his craft from the confines of his room. Practicing every day after work and most of his weekends, Whiplash began to turn this “DJ thing,&#8221; as most called it, into a lifestyle. In late 2002, Whiplash came across the school that his childhood DJ hero, Jam Master Jay, had created: the Scratch DJ Academy in NYC. There, Whiplash was able to hone his turntablist skills of mixing, blending, and scratching. After spending many weekends and some weekdays at Scratch, Whiplash was asked to be a Teacher&#8217;s Assistant at the school. Excited to help, Whiplash agreed to become a part of this amazing school in New York&#8217;s East Village, helping instruct students alongside DJs great as Grandwizzard Theodore, Luv Bug Starski, and Grandmaster Caz. He was also given the opportunity to work with former ITF and DMC champ I.Emerge, Jahi Sundance, Max Glazer and the Turntable Twins; Damage &amp; Verge 24/7 has been a very rewarding experience for Whiplash.</p>

<p>Currently, Whiplash is a member of the Coast 2 Coast DJs, The Third Coast DJs, and Funk Shop DJs, and has DJed a number of standing gigs, including Thursday nights at Copas Bar &amp; Lounge in the Woodlands. He is affiliated with the clothing brand 2520NYC, which he met back in 2009. 2520 supports Whiplash by hosting his mixtape on the site (2520NYC.com) with future projects in the works. The company has created a &#8220;DJ Whiplash&#8221; t-shirt, which helps him promote 2520 clothing. <p> Rap artist L.A.D recently released the official video for his single “Inherit The Earth.” Coast 2 Coast Video Distribution presents the project along with Embassy Ent., which is from his mixtape “Midwest Kush: Pyrex Edition Pt. 2,” featuring Jim Jones, S-Class Sonny, Method Man, Birdman, Bow Tie, and Kool G Rap. </p>

<p>As a teenager in New York City, the Crown Heights, Brooklyn-bred MC born Lason Jackson negotiated his first deal just as he was finishing high school. Having studied the game as a protégé of the Wu at the height of their success LA, who considers RZA a mentor, was more than prepared when an in-studio freestyle on Hot 97’s “The Stretch and Bobbito Show” drew the attention of major and indie labels alike. Securing a distribution deal through Navarre Distribution, he released his debut album Heist of the Century in 1999 through his own Embassy Entertainment. The project, on which LA also served as A&amp;R and executive producer, went on to sell over 350,000 copies independently. His success gave him an opportunity to tour internationally with the likes of Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and of course, the Wu-Tang Clan. Somehow, while he never stopped being an artist, LA’s career as a businessman took precedence. Relocating to Grand Rapids, MI, LA launched a management company, invested in real estate, and opened and operated a children’s clothing store. But he was always a musician. </p>

<p>Upon relocating to Atlanta, he partnered with DJ Drama and DJ Sense, brokering a label deal for the Aphilliates Music Group, a burgeoning brand which positioned itself at the forefront of the southern hip hop movement and is also home to his younger brother Willie The Kid, the label’s flagship artist. Upon securing AMG’s partnership with Atlantic Records, LA also negotiated a joint venture deal for Embassy Entertainment with Universal Records and a distribution agreement for Aphilliates Management through Asylum/Warner Brothers. He immediately took the reigns, rapidly assuming the role that has him heavily involved in the day-to-day operations of AMG, Aphilliates Management, and Embassy Entertainment. In addition to A&amp;R direction for all of the label’s projects, negotiating booking engagements, and brokering deals like DJ Drama’s endorsements with LRG, Pepsi and KFC, LA also executive produced the highly anticipated Gangsta Grillz: The Album. Deemed an instant street classic, the project featured appearances by Outkast, Lil’ Wayne, T.I., Young Jeezy, Nelly, Rick Ross, and Pharell.</p>

<p>Still, LA The Darkman remains as much a musician as he is a businessman. As he became more involved with the careers of the artists on the AMG roster, he again got the urge to create an album. Returning as a mature, more complete artist, LA continues to represent the same principles and convictions he always has. His is music that seeks to educate while entertaining, pushing the importance of strength, knowledge, and financial independence. His primary aim, however, is to continue to help hip hop grow.
